CompTIA Commends Senate Vote to Overturn 1099 Requirement Measure Goes to President for Signature

The Senate voted overwhelmingly 87-12 on April 5, 2011 to repeal the new 1099 tax provision reporting requirement, which mandates that starting in 2012 all businesses must file a form 1099 when paying any business or individual $600 or more for goods or services.  After much political maneuvering, Senator Harry Reid agreed to take up the House-passed version of repeal, H.R. 4.  The Senate’s approval of this legislation (without amendment) means that it will now go directly to the President for his signature.  President Obama has already indicated his support for repeal, and we expect this legislation will be signed into law shortly. The following statement can be attributed to Todd Thibodeaux, President and CEO of CompTIA.

“CompTIA thanks Members of Congress for listening to the voice of the small business IT community in voting to repeal the 1099 reporting requirement. Small IT businesses would have suffered under a mountain of red tape had this provision been enacted.  Eliminating the new 1099 reporting requirement is a slam dunk that ensures our economy can continue to rebound with small businesses leading the charge.

“As an organization representing small and medium sized IT businesses, CompTIA calls on lawmakers from the House and Senate to continue other efforts that boost small businesses and help American workers get back in the game.  Repeal of the new 1099 reporting requirement is a very positive sign that Congress and the President have listened to the many small businesses that opposed imposing this compliance nightmare.

“The repeal of this rule will allow small IT companies to get back to doing what they do best - running their businesses and generating jobs for our 21st century economy.”
